SERDP
The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) is DoD’s environmental science and technology program, planned and executed in full partnership with the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, with participation by numerous other federal and non-federal organizations.
ESTCP
The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) is DoD’s environmental technology demonstration and validation program. The goal of ESTCP is to identify, demonstrate, and transfer technologies that address DoD’s highest priority environmental requirements.

ASETSDefense 2011: Sustainable Surface Engineering for Aerospace and Defense
February 8-10, 2011
New Orleans Marriott at the Convention Center, New Orleans, LA
859 Convention Center Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70130
ASETSDefense 2011 will focus on ESOH and life-cycle cost issues relevant to application of surface engineering technologies for the production and sustainment of aerospace and defense systems, including aircraft, vehicles, ships and electronics. Briefings will present engineering data and discuss practical issues of implementing new processes. The workshop will be geared toward providing engineering information to authorizing agencies, weapon system program offices, depot engineers and the commercial supply chain on issues such as:
-
Hexavalent chromium processes, materials and their alternatives, including hard chrome plating, chromate conversion and sealing, primers, chromic acid anodizing, wash primers and bond primers
-
Primers, paint systems and stackups
-
Replacements for cadmium plating, beryllium, and high VOC materials such as topcoats and sealants
-
Specific systems such as landing gear, fasteners, hydraulics, and electrical connectors
-
Development of new corrosion and embrittlement test methods
-
Localized repair and rebuild
-
Technologies developed, approved or used outside North America
-
Regulations that affect DoD operations and the supply chain, including REACH and the DFARS that will implement the policy as stated in the April 8, 2009 memo from the Under-Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics on “Minimizing the Use of Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)”
As in previous ASETSDefense workshops (see www.asetsdefense.org/PastWorkshops), the emphasis will be on the practical issues of what options are available, successes and failures, what has been approved and implemented, what works best in different situations, gaps in capabilities and knowledge, updates on current projects, and developments in materials, processes and test methods.
Side meetings will be held on issues of interest to specific groups, including one on the use of databases and computational methods for design and prediction, currently planned for the afternoon of Monday, February 7.
Formal and informal discussions are an integral part of these workshops, with opportunities for participants to hold side meetings for discussion of specific technologies and issues. If you would like to recommend a particular topic be covered or set up a side meeting, please send an e-mail to asetsdefense2011@asetsdefense.org, (847) 680-9420.
